Tier 1 Foundation — Canonical Reference for Writing Systems and Inscription Ability
This document is the canonical reference for every writing system, language, and inscription mechanic encountered across the 77-chapter Tier A Solo Base arc plus Prologue and Epilogue. It owns the cross-cutting script canon. Per-chapter implementation lives in T2 Chapter Design briefs. Trade 9 Inscription questline detail lives in T1\_Trades\_Master and T5 detailed questline docs. Vril-layer reading mechanics live in T1\_Vril\_and\_Magic\_System\_Master. Cultural depiction hard lines anchor in CVD §6 and §17.1. The Twelve-Tier Hermetic mastery framework anchors in CVD §12.1.
The doc is always-loaded across every authoring session that touches inscription, script, language fragment, or written-content material. Quest Writing, Region Building, Cascade, Validation, Project 5 UE5 environmental script rendering, and Project 7 Art per-chapter script visual design all consume this reference.
§1. INSCRIPTION AS CONSCIOUSNESS-TECHNOLOGY
Per CVD §14.3 Pillar 9 substrate-concept reframing, Trade 9 Inscription is consciousness-as-written-record. Language is reality-shaping practice. Mastery progressively unlocks substrate-inscription reading at the Adeptus Minor tier and above. The Ch 69 Duat 42 Negative Confessions canonical recitation event is the substrate concept's surfacing per CVD §17.3.
The reframing operates at the substrate layer per CVD Pillar 12\. Surface-track players (Layer 1\) experience inscription as standard Pillar 7 puzzle-solution and power-unlock content — Sumerian cuneiform decodes hidden chambers, Sanskrit mantras unlock mystery school techniques, Old Norse runes activate weapon abilities, Egyptian hieroglyphics access tomb artifact mechanics, Aboriginal symbol systems gate Dreamtime access, Mayan calendrical math solves timing puzzles. Depth-track players (Layer 2\) engage primary-source language fragments, journal entries that carry epigraphic context, Grimoire links that cross-reference inscription traditions across cultures. Canonical-truth players (Layer 3\) at high mastery operate within substrate-inscription perception directly — the practice of reading is the practice of perceiving the substrate's vril imprint on physical, atmospheric, and apparatus-integrated medium.
The player-facing trade name is Inscription. The substrate concept Inscription encodes is consciousness-as-written-record. Mastery progression unlocks philosophical depth per culture: Egyptian hieroglyph mastery surfaces the temple-mystery framework; cuneiform mastery surfaces the Sumerian-Akkadian scribal worldview; Maya glyph mastery surfaces the K'iche' calendrical-cosmological framework; Norse runic mastery surfaces the Hávamál self-sacrifice ordeal that carried the runes into human transmission. The trade master at each home base teaches the worldview alongside the operational skill.
§2. THE INSCRIPTION ABILITY — ARCHITECTURE AND ACTIVATION
2.1 Two reading modalities
Two distinct reading modalities operate in the game and produce distinct information.
The vril-trace modality is the protagonist's innate inscription perception. It activates progressively, reaching first deliberate use at Ch 3 Liang Bua and Adeptus Minor substrate-perception onset at Ch 15 Egypt. Vril-trace reading perceives vital-force imprint left by conscious intent on physical substrate. The substrate may be stone, metal, textile, atmospheric vril during activation events, or apparatus-integrated notation. Vril-trace reading bypasses semantic-decipherment requirement at the substrate-perception layer; the trace conveys substrate-state information distinct from linguistic content.
The scholarship modality is the healer's child's parallel-analytical companion capability. It activates with companion joining at Ch 13 South Africa and reaches its first showcase moment at Ch 16 Indus Valley. Scholarship reading uses comparative linguistics, bilingual inscription cross-reference, archaeological context, and primary-source academic methodology. It produces semantic and phonetic content where the script is decipherable; it produces explicit non-semantic context where decipherment is incomplete.
The two modalities are canonically distinct. Some Inscription Limit encounters surface where both modalities hit their respective limits at the same script (Meroitic at Ch 14 — phonetics yes, semantics no for both modalities; Harappan at Ch 16 — neither modality resolves). Some encounters produce dual-layer reading where the modalities yield different information about the same artifact (Egyptian hieroglyphs at Ch 15 — exoteric public text via scholarship, esoteric priestly text via scholarship plus initiation context, vril-layer via vril-trace mastery).
2.2 Progressive activation across the arc
The ability progresses chapter by chapter through canonical milestones. The numerical mastery scale follows the Twelve-Tier Hermetic framework per CVD §12.1.
Ch 1-2 Fairy realm childhood and Flores oral-tradition entry. Ability dormant on the human side. Player-as-Elven-King reads fairy realm script natively in Prologue and Ch 1; the script registers as default, not as a category to recognize.
Ch 3 Manggarai Village. First deliberate use at Liang Bua cave. Inscription Mastery Tier 1 Neophyte baseline activation. Vril-trace perception at high-intensity sites only.
Ch 4 Bali. First formal writing system encounter. Aksara Bali, Kawi for Old Javanese, lontar palm-leaf manuscripts.
Ch 5 Sumatra-Java. First cross-cultural inscription comparison. Surat Batak pustaha plus Old Javanese and Sanskrit at Borobudur. Borobudur relief panel inscriptions and three-cosmological-level architectural inscription program (Kamadhatu / Rupadhatu / Arupadhatu) provide the chapter's inscription substrate.
Ch 6 Sri Lanka. First Indo-Aryan script content. Pali and Sanskrit at Anuradhapura, Sigiriya mirror wall graffiti.
Ch 7 South India. Tamil script full deployment. Acceleration point in inscription discipline.
Ch 8 Swahili Coast. Arabic script in port context, Swahili Ajami, Chinese porcelain provenance marks. The Sealed Letter from Ch 7 reveals as fairy realm script (see §6 fairy realm script revelation arc).
Ch 9 Ethiopia. Ge'ez liturgical script. Ezana 4th-c. CE trilingual stele. First full Inscription arc exercise per cascade canon.
Ch 10 Rift Valley. San rock art geometric entoptic patterns. Pre-alphabetic sign-system. Blombos Cave 100,000-BP engraved-ochre proto-symbolic markings as forward-anchor.

Ch 14 Nubia and Kush. Meroitic script — first Inscription Limit encounter. Phonetic-without-semantic. Inscription Limit Mechanic formalizes here per CVD canon. Canonical Trade 9 Philosophus Portal Grade ceremony per CVD §12.1 — the trade master's wisdom-test sequence that gates Adeptus Minor initiation at Ch 15 Egypt. Humility-attribute determines productive engagement and Portal Grade completion. Accepting the canonical limit is the wisdom; declining decoder-ring projection is the wisdom; cognitive-dissonance-productive engagement is the test.
Ch 15 Egypt. Adeptus Minor onset — substrate-perception begins. Triple-layer hieroglyphic reading available: exoteric, esoteric, and vril-layer. First Trade 9 home base. Serapeum and Great Pyramid as Component 11 anchors.
Ch 17 Mesopotamia. Cuneiform full deployment — maximum inscription reward chapter in the arc. Enheduanna Hymn to Inanna, Epic of Gilgamesh, Code of Hammurabi, accounting tablets. Architect first speaks to the protagonist in the fairy realm's own language (spoken layer, distinct from cuneiform script layer; semantically connected to the Ch 8 Sealed Letter reveal). Göbekli Tepe inscription-context surfaces as Component 11 anchor.
Ch 18 Levant. Hebrew, Ugaritic, Phoenician alphabet. Phoenician transmission as the source of every Western alphabet. Baalbek Trilithon as Component 11 anchor. Journal becomes plot object this chapter.
Ch 19 Arabia and Persia. Old Avestan Gathas, Young Avestan, Old Persian cuneiform, Behistun Inscription trilingual (Old Persian \+ Elamite \+ Akkadian). Multi-script trilingual capacity activates.
Ch 20 Silk Road. Tocharian, Khotanese Saka, Sogdian merchant script, Old Uyghur, Middle Chinese Tang-era operational fluency. Velheim Samarkand 450 CE archive sealed at Dunhuang Cave 17\.
Ch 21 China. Oracle bone script — third independent origin of writing parallel to cuneiform and hieroglyphs. Book burning moral choice surfaces inscription-destruction as canonical House of Velheim pattern.
Ch 22 Steppe (Mongolia). Old Uyghur Mongol-administration deployment. Orkhon Old Turkic inscriptions. Mongol Secret History c. 1240 CE.
Ch 23 Greece. Greek alphabet — Phoenician-descended via Al Mina-archetype contact c. 800 BCE, vowel-innovation as Greek addition. Linear A undeciphered Minoan, Linear B deciphered Mycenaean Greek (Ventris 1952). Antikythera Mechanism as Component 11 anchor.
Ch 24 Celtic and Norse. Druidic ban on writing as canonical knowledge-preservation framework. Norse runes — Hávamál ordeal where Odin hung on Yggdrasil, wounded by his own spear, gave his eye to Mimir's well, to receive the runes.
Ch 25 Anatolia. Hittite cuneiform (distinct Indo-European language layer from Akkadian Ch 17), Anatolian Luwian hieroglyphic, Hurrian Hymn (Ugaritic tablet H6 — oldest notated composition), Çatalhöyük pre-alphabetic symbolic systems, Treaty of Kadesh 1259 BCE Egyptian-hieroglyphic plus Akkadian-cuneiform bilingual treaty. First cross-script comparative-reading tier advancement.
Ch 26 Eastern Europe. Slavic liturgical script traditions develop through cascade-restart authoring (per CVD-aligned content framing).
Ch 27 Central Europe. Architectural inscription suppression themes per chapter brief. Hermetic mystery school anchor (Pillar 4\) surfaces inscription-as-mystical-practice substrate.
Ch 28 Voynich Manuscript. The healer's child reads it. The reading is canonical artistic answer to a real open question per CVD §4.1 design philosophy (documented material, artistically depicted). Mystery questline peak content.
Ch 29 Sámi (Scandinavia). Oral-not-script Inscription Limit. Noaidi drum iconography encoding astronomical and seasonal content. The joik as vocal tradition that expresses essence rather than describes. Second Trade 9 home base — the paradox-completion home where the inscription discipline lands in a culture that does not write.
Ch 30 British Isles. Stonehenge astronomical numerology, Norman Conquest documentary-land-seizure inscription themes. Not a Trade 9 home base.
Ch 31 Iberia. Arabic script at deeper Moorish Córdoba library depth. Altamira cave art. Basque (Euskara) linguistic isolate — the second fundamental Inscription Limit: a LIVING language-isolate with no established relatives that the inscription ability canonically cannot fully read (distinct from the Ch 16 Harappan dead-script limit, which is a dead script fully undeciphered — Basque is a living tongue kept by being unbrokenly itself). The general "canonical hard limits persist regardless of mastery tier" doctrine (HL_0094) binds.
Ch 32 North Africa. Tifinagh script (Amazigh / Berber). Almoravid and Almohad medieval era.
Ch 33-37 Atlantic Approach. Per chapter cascade-restart authoring; Cape Verde crossroads, Mid-Atlantic Sailor's Knowledge, final approach.
Ch 38 Azores Midpoint. Sealed Letter resolution event during Atlantis astral projection sequence. Fairy realm script first becomes legible at the protagonist's adult inscription capacity (see §6). Journal transferred to protagonist. Combat runs through the Tier-A environmental and atmospheric boss per CVD Pillar 3 plus §17.10 pacing (§17.7 is the Naming hard line, not combat), not combat absence.
Ch 39-50 Modern world arc. Per-chapter modern documentary inscription corpus. Inscription ability applied to legal records, institutional archives, conflict-minerals supply-chain documentation, declassified primary-source corpus (Ch 46 Area 51 CIA 2013-release, Ch 49 Guatemala PBSUCCESS National Security Archive). Modern-institutional document register operates at Adeptus Minor mastery and above.
Ch 41 South Africa Modern. Drakensberg /Xam rock art now at full adult-inscription-mastery reading. Vimana Coordinate 1 of 6 unlock — the first numbered coordinate of the six-coordinate hunt, resolving the earlier unnumbered Ch 10 and Ch 13 foreshadowing clues.
Ch 42 Haiti. Vodou veve ground-drawings as ritual sign-system encoded with per-lwa specific iconography. Haitian Kreyòl documentary tradition. Bois Caïman August 14 1791 ceremonial primary-source content. 122-year French indemnity 1825-1947 archival corpus. Inscription discipline applied within CVD §6 cultural depiction standard — Vodou is a living religion; Hollywood zombie tropes have no place in the chapter.
Ch 44 Cahokia. Mississippian Ideological Interaction Sphere serpent-iconography. Federal Reserve founding archival corpus (Jekyll Island November 1910). Caduceus-in-financial-iconography Thread 2 cross-domain content.
Ch 45 Central USA Southwest. Chacoan astronomical-road-system (Great North Road astronomical alignment). Hopi snake ceremony. Pueblo Revolt 1680\.
Ch 46 Southwest USA. Area 51 declassified CIA primary-source corpus.
Ch 47-48 Mesoamerica. Maya glyph full-decipherment payoff (Knorozov 1952 phonetic decipherment as scholarship anchor). Popol Vuh hero-twins primary-source. Suppressed Maya codices: Dresden, Madrid, Paris, Grolier-Maya. Diego de Landa 1562 Maní book-burning event surfaces inscription-destruction as Velheim pattern. Aztec calendar stone Piedra del Sol. Quetzalcoatl serpent-thread synthesis-recognition canonical anchor — protagonist's first conscious recognition of forty-five-chapter cumulative serpent-thread cross-cultural convergence. Kukulkan El Castillo Chichen Itza spring-and-autumn-equinox shadow-serpent-descent. Adeptus Major onset — Maya glyph payoff is the canonical Tier 7 cross-chapter mastery questline.
Ch 49 Guatemala. PBSUCCESS National Security Archive declassified primary-source corpus full-depth — the most-completely-documented modern Velheim operational case in the arc. Pärssinen, Schaan, and Ranzi western-Amazonia satellite archaeological survey.
Ch 50 Amazon. Trade 4 Herbalism modern home base; inscription content includes pre-Columbian geoglyph survey corpus and contact-zone documentation. FUNAI respectful-distance hard line operates.
Ch 51 Andean Highlands. Nazca geoglyphs — non-written inscription readable only from elevated perception. Cuzco ceque system — 41 imaginary lines from Coricancha temple, the most complex non-written information encoding system the inscription ability encounters in the modern-world arc.
Ch 53-55 Atacama. Vimana activation coordinate decoding. Vimana inscription layer on the device itself — coordinates readable at Adeptus Minor mastery. 33.33° S latitude convergence at Ch 55\. Atacama ouroboros air-inscription is the first canonical activation-specific inscription class — the inscription manifests in atmospheric medium during the activation duration and disperses at activation close.
Ch 56 Arctic Greenland. Norse-Inuit cross-tradition contact-layer reading. Kingittorsuaq runestone c. 1300 CE — northernmost runestone. Inuit oral tradition. Contact-layer reading at Adeptus Major mastery and Vril Sight tier 5+ reveals cross-tradition encoding overlay where runic carries vril-signature compatible with Inuit qaumaniq luminous-essence framework.
Ch 57 Australia. Songline-not-script Inscription Limit. Songlines are the most sophisticated non-written information encoding system in the arc — more complex than the ceque system at Cuzco, more geographically comprehensive than any other oral tradition the inscription ability has encountered. The Ch 29 joik tradition is recognized here by the Aboriginal Elder; the two oldest musical traditions in the game, at opposite ends of the Earth, recognize each other through the protagonist. Cultural depiction hard lines per CVD §6 and §17.1 operate at maximum depth; no combat against community representatives, no AIATSIS-registered artwork reproduced, songlines referenced as living-inscription substrate and never composed.
Ch 58 Antarctica. Vimana underground facility. Apparatus-integration reading is the canonical fifth inscription application class — notation that is simultaneously functional (apparatus-operational) and informational (records family rift-research history). Reading apparatus-integration inscription requires Adeptus Minor mastery, Engineering Trade familiarity, and Vril Sight tier 6+. Phase 3 stabilization is partly readable as apparatus-integration de-encoding. Possible fairy-realm-adjacent script on the Vimana facility itself surfaces in cascade-restart authoring.
Ch 59 Africa Revisit. Inscription content develops through cascade-restart authoring; modern continental documentary register at adult mastery.
Ch 60 Asia Revisit. Same.
Ch 61 Europe Revisit. Same.
Ch 62 Americas Revisit. Same.
Ch 63 Pacific Revisit. Same.
Ch 64 Underwater Sites. Submerged-site vril-imprint reading. Doggerland, sunken cities home of Thread 4 Flood Memory payoff. Inscription ability applied to inscriptions preserved beneath sediment and submerged stone. Phoenician-reproduction lineages of Atlantean inscriptional content surface here as Phoenician-trade-network artifacts (the Phoenician scribal network carried fragmentary Atlantean inscription recipes across Ch 24 Norse, Ch 28-area Roman, and Ch 31 Iberian historical-record fragments — surface form transmitted, dimensional-thickness understanding lost).
Ch 65 Antarctica Return. Inscription content at Adeptus Major mastery; inscriptions encountered on apparatus and Vimana facility surfaces at this revisit have grown clearer since Ch 58\.
Ch 66 Atlantis. Atlantean inscription system at full-mastery encounter. Pre-fall civilizational scale. Dimensional-thickness perceivable. Vril-engineering integrated. Orichalcum metallurgical signature is the Atlantean inscription system's metallurgical encoding — the original form, distinct from the Phoenician-transmitted fragmentary recipes encountered at Ch 64\.
Ch 67 Pohjola / Sariola. Vril configuration challenge. Mathematical navigation. Inscription ability tests with engineering-context cross-discipline application. Adeptus Exemptus onset — cross-discipline mastery surfaces the Tier 8 quest-gate.
Ch 68 the Apsu. Ecological listening. Cross-species substrate. Inscription ability tests with animal-communication-trade cross-discipline application.
Ch 69 the Duat. Architect's Final Negotiation. World Tree root structure as structural script. The 42 Negative Confessions canonical recitation event lives here per CVD §17.3 Vril and Substrate Hard Line — the substrate concept Inscription encodes (consciousness-as-written-record, language as reality-shaping practice) reaches its canonical surfacing in the recitation. The recitation is the Layer 3 substrate operating directly. Mastery Adeptus Exemptus prerequisite for full participation.
Ch 70-73 Fairy Realm Return. Full fairy realm script legibility. The protagonist now reads the script with 68 chapters of human-world inscriptional context alongside. The script the player-as-Elven-King could not articulate before the fall — articulated now. Mastery Adeptus Exemptus.
Ch 76 Cassius Velheim. The House of Velheim's ancient document — assembled across the arc from the 77 hidden inscriptions per §5 — is fully readable at this point. The assembly is the foundation document.
Ch 75 Father Encounter. Three path-distinct encounters. Inscription content develops through Project 4 Quest Writing.
Ch 76-77 Grand Sage Waterfall. Thread 17 resolves. Pre-Ch 76 Grand Sage identity hint \= CVD §17.9 hard line violation. Spoiler protection on chapter content. Mastery progression continues to Magister Templi via post-Ch 77 prestige questline (Tier 9 single-tier breakpoint per CVD §12.1).
2.3 Trade 9 home base canonical assignment
Per CVD §11.3 trade home-base canon, Trade 9 Inscription has two home bases, both ancient era — the only trade in the arc with this configuration. The first is Ch 15 Egypt — the inscription discipline's Adeptus Minor onset and triple-layer hieroglyphic reading activation. The second is Ch 29 Sámi — the paradox-completion home base where the inscription discipline lands in a culture without a writing system. The Sámi second-home framing is canonical: an oral-not-script tradition completes the inscription discipline by surfacing what inscription is for when there is no script to write — the joik holds the substrate the runic mark would otherwise hold.
This is a canonical exception within the §17.6 trade home-base rule (one ancient plus one modern, never two-in-period). Trade 9 carries two ancient home bases by paradox-completion design and no modern home base. The discipline's substrate-foundation is fully laid in ancient era — the four independent origins of writing all fall ancient era, and the modern arc carries inscription content via documentary corpora rather than script-system home bases. T1\_Trades\_Master holds the canonical home-base assignment and questline detail. CVD references; T1\_Trades\_Master assigns.
§3. THE INSCRIPTION LIMIT MECHANIC
The Inscription ability encounters canonical epistemic limits where scholarly knowledge does not permit semantic resolution and vril-trace perception does not bypass it. The limit is canonical academic-reality reflected in mechanic; it is not skill failure. The protagonist experiences the pronounce-without-understanding sensation that documented epigraphy literature documents.
3.1 Core mechanics
Phonetic reading. The player reads sounds perfectly for scripts where decipherment is phonetically complete.
Semantic opacity. The player cannot resolve meaning where language-knowledge does not exist in scholarship or in the substrate's vril-trace.
Contextual-Use Construction. The player approximates meaning via bilingual inscription cross-reference, material-culture context, and parallel-text comparison without a decoder-ring.
Cognitive-dissonance-productive. The experience is intentionally uncomfortable; canonical academic-reality reflected in mechanic.
3.2 Limit types — escalating across the arc
Phonetic-without-semantic at Ch 14 Meroitic. Sounds readable per Griffith 1911 phonetic decipherment. Meaning unresolved per 115+ years scholarship.
Fully undeciphered at Ch 16 Harappan Indus. No phonetics, no semantics, only sub-linguistic vril imprint per 4,000+ examples across hundreds of sites.
Oral-not-script at Ch 29 Sámi. Noaidi drum iconography plus joik tradition. The tradition is literacy-incompatible by canonical design.
Songline-not-script at Ch 57 Australia. Performative-knowledge-incompatible. Rainbow Serpent songline tradition.
3.3 What inscription authoring does not do
No invented-semantic-content. The protagonist does not decode a Meroitic text with meanings that don't exist in scholarship. Cultural-sensitivity violation. Faction penalty.
No decoder-ring projection. The protagonist does not gain anachronistic knowledge.
No skill-failure-framing. The limit is not the protagonist being insufficiently skilled. The limit is the knowledge's absence, or the substrate's resistance to extraction by either modality.
3.4 The Humility attribute-function
Intelligence \+ Intuition \+ Humility determine productive engagement at Inscription Limit encounters. Humility is the player's measured willingness to accept that some knowledge is canonically gone and cannot be vril-cheated back into existence. Higher humility scores produce more productive Contextual-Use Construction outcomes. Cultural-sensitivity discipline applies at all tradition-specific limit instances.
§4. SCRIPT FAMILIES AND DOCUMENTED GENEALOGY
Per CVD §4.1 design philosophy (documented material, artistically depicted), the game's script genealogy follows real-world academic consensus.
4.1 Four independent origins of writing
Writing was invented independently in at least four places.
Sumerian cuneiform c. 3400 BCE — administrative origin (accounting tablets).
Egyptian hieroglyphics c. 3200 BCE — religious and royal origin, parallel development to cuneiform with academic consensus on independence.
Chinese oracle bone script c. 1200 BCE earliest surviving (earlier forms likely) — divinatory origin.
Mesoamerican (Olmec → Maya → Aztec) c. 900 BCE earliest inscriptions — ritual and calendrical origin.
4.2 The Phoenician transmission
Phoenician 22-consonant alphabet (no vowels) is canonical ancestor of Greek, Latin, Arabic, Hebrew, and most Western and Middle Eastern alphabets. Reached Greece through trade contact c. 800 BCE per Al Mina archetype contact sites.
Western chain: Phoenician → Greek → Etruscan → Latin → modern Western European scripts.
Eastern chain: Phoenician → Aramaic → Hebrew, Arabic, plus various Asian derivatives.
The protagonist's inscription ability reading Phoenician at Ch 18 accesses the source of every Western alphabet. The Velheim Phoenician-trade-network suppression layer per CVD §3 Component 4 surfaces in this transmission — the Phoenician scribal network carried selective inscription content while withholding selective inscription content; the trade-network suppression operates through what was transmitted and what was not.
4.3 Undeciphered scripts
Meroitic at Ch 14\. Phonetics deciphered Griffith 1911\. Semantics unresolved 115+ years.
Harappan Indus at Ch 16\. Fully undeciphered. 4,000+ examples across hundreds of sites.
Voynich Manuscript at Ch 28\. Unread for 600 years. The healer's child reads it in-game; the reading is canonical artistic answer to a real open question per CVD §4.1 design philosophy.
Basque language (adjacent at Ch 31). Linguistic isolate; no documented relatives. Language not script per se, but classified here.
4.4 Non-script encoding systems (Inscription Limit zone scripts)
These systems carry information without alphabetic or syllabic script. They occupy the Inscription Limit zone where vril-trace and scholarship modalities both engage non-traditional substrate.
Austronesian oral tradition at Ch 2\. Pre-script oral.
Blombos engraved-ochre proto-symbolic markings at Ch 10 forward-link from Ch 13 Cape. 100,000-BP earliest pre-script encoding (Henshilwood and Marean).
San rock art entoptic patterns at Ch 10\. Pre-alphabetic sign-system. 70,000-year continuous tradition.
Baka and Mbuti forest-as-text at Ch 11\. Pre-writing living-text.
Akan goldweights at Ch 12\. Parallel institutional-scale non-alphabetic. Each goldweight encodes a proverb (Garrard).
Ifa 256 Odu at Ch 12\. Binary-mathematical divination encoding. 16² configuration matrix. Babalawo casting protocol (Bascom). Parallel structure to I Ching 64-hexagram per Thread 7\.
Nsibidi proto-writing at Ch 12 (seed). Igbo origin.
/Xam rock art entoptic continuation at Ch 13 Drakensberg. 70,000-year tradition Southern African peak treatment.
Druidic oral tradition at Ch 24\. Deliberate non-writing — knowledge preserved in living human memory because memory requires context that makes knowledge meaningful.
Sámi joik plus drum iconography at Ch 29\. Oral-not-script Inscription Limit.
Cuzco ceque system at Ch 51\. 41 imaginary lines maintained in oral memory.
Australian songlines at Ch 57\. Songline-not-script Inscription Limit.
4.5 Five inscription application classes
Five canonical inscription application classes operate across the arc, locked through cascade-staging confirmation.
Class 1 — Stone-cut. Carved into stone substrate. Egyptian hieroglyphs, cuneiform tablets, Norse runic stones, Maya glyph stelae, Greek alphabet inscriptions.
Class 2 — Metallic-cast. Inscribed or cast into metal. Akan goldweights, Phoenician trade-tags, Atlantean orichalcum.
Class 3 — Textile-encoded. Pattern-encoded into woven, knotted, or printed textile substrate. Crosses with Trade 6 Tailoring.
Class 4 — Atmospheric activation. Inscription manifests in atmospheric vril during activation events and disperses at activation close. First canonical instance Ch 55 Atacama ouroboros air-inscription at Vimana activation. Activation-specific.
Class 5 — Apparatus-integrated. Inscription integrated with apparatus mechanical components — simultaneously functional and informational. First canonical instance Ch 58 Antarctica Vimana facility apparatus-integration. Reading requires Adeptus Minor mastery plus Engineering Trade familiarity plus Vril Sight tier 6+.
§5. THE 77 HIDDEN INSCRIPTION SPINE
Every chapter contains at least one hidden inscription — visible-but-unread by modern observers, perceptible to the protagonist's inscription ability and the healer's child's scholarship modality together. Each is a fragment of a larger text. Concealed-meaning technique per documented Western mystery tradition (Hermetic and Freemasonic lineage).
The complete text, assembled from all 77 fragments, is the House of Velheim's most ancient document. Assembly completes by Ch 76 at the latest (the Cassius Velheim confrontation chapter). On the Truly Good integrity path, the assembled text becomes the foundation document for the post-Ch 57 institutional campaign that uses public exposure to dismantle Velheim operations across the Ch 59-65 continental revisits.
The 77-fragment spine is the structural backbone shared between Trade 9 Inscription questline and SQ3 Archaeology / Inscription / Occult questline. Per-fragment placement, word-count architecture, and payoff structure live in T1\_Trades\_Master and T5 detailed questline docs. CVD §11 quest structure framework anchors. The Languages doc owns the script-system canon that the fragments inscribe.
5.1 Living Inscription Arc — Adeptus Major and above
At Adeptus Major mastery and above, the protagonist can inscribe vril patterns on objects. This is the Living Inscription Arc — a synthesis of documented Norse and Baltic runic-charm tradition with documented Chinese seal-carving practice. Objects inscribed by the protagonist gain defensive or offensive vril-activated properties based on the specific inscription. The technique scales: at Adeptus Exemptus, multi-object inscription chains operate; at Magister Templi, palimpsest-mastery becomes available — every palimpsest in every visited location becomes readable, unlocking hidden historical layers in every site.
The Living Inscription master-NPC is the 104-year-old Istanbul scholar who teaches palimpsest reading via the Archimedes Palimpsest as canonical practice example.
§6. THE FAIRY REALM SCRIPT REVELATION ARC
This arc is Thread 17's most narratively consequential content and the game's earliest cross-world narrative pivot.
6.1 Prologue baseline
Player-as-Elven-King reads fairy realm script natively in Prologue and Ch 1 without remark. The script is established as default state before the fall. The player will not register fairy realm script as a distinct category until it reappears in the human world as something unfamiliar.
6.2 The Sealed Letter — Ch 7 origin to Ch 8 reveal
Guruji Achuthan, the Kalari master in Ch 7 South India, entrusts the protagonist with a sealed letter at the Ch 7 transition. The reveal location is Kilwa Kisiwani, Swahili coast, Ch 8\. Scholar-Outsider Amara is the only NPC in Ch 8 who can read the script. The script is the fairy realm's own writing system.
The partial-content reveal carries one of three implications, all canonical:
Someone else has been in the fairy realm.
Someone knows the fairy realm's scripts without having been there.
Someone is using the trade network to communicate in a language meant for the fairy realm.
The partial-content pointer directs toward the Aksumite inscription complex — connecting to Ch 9 Ethiopia opening. The mystery duration runs Ch 9-38. Per Thread 17 Ch 8 anchor, the reveal recontextualizes the entire Southeast Asia arc: every inscription from Ch 4-7 the player has seen may have carried fairy-realm cross-contamination they didn't recognize as such.
6.3 The Mesopotamian echo — Ch 17
The Architect's first direct dialogue with the protagonist at Ch 17 speaks in the fairy realm's own language. This is spoken language, not script, but it confirms the Sealed Letter implication: someone operating in the human world has fairy realm knowledge. The Architect is a role across five thousand years per locked canon — the Sealed Letter's author-category is consistent with the Architect-role.
6.4 The Azores midpoint resolution — Ch 38
Per CVD canon and Phase 0 pacing pass, Ch 38 Azores is the midpoint chapter where Threads 1, 2, and 4 complete their first loops, time fluctuations end permanently, and the journal transfers to the protagonist. Thread 17 reaches its first major resolution alongside.
The Sealed Letter's full content becomes readable during the Atlantis astral projection sequence at Ch 38\. What was partial at Ch 8 is complete at Ch 38\. The "someone else has been in the fairy realm" hypothesis resolves: the House of Velheim has had fairy-realm-script-holding operators continuously across five thousand years. This resolution establishes the Ch 59-65 institutional campaign stakes and the Ch 69 Duat final-negotiation context.
Combat at Ch 38 runs through the environmental and atmospheric boss per CVD Pillar 3 plus §17.10 (§17.7 is the Naming hard line).
6.5 The fairy realm return — Ch 70-77
Per CVD canon, the player experiences for the first time what the prologue Elven King felt. Every ability is enhanced. Every perception is expanded. The ceiling the player has been playing toward for 75 chapters is reached.
Fairy realm script legibility becomes full at Ch 70-77 — but now loaded with 68 chapters of human-world inscriptional context. The script the protagonist could not articulate before the fall, articulated now. Per CVD §17.9 show-don't-tell hard line, pre-Ch 76 hints of Grand Sage identity are forbidden; Ch 70-77 fairy-realm-script content carries spoiler protection beyond what is canonically locked in T2 Chapter Design briefs.
Per CVD §12.1, the Twelve-Tier Hermetic mastery framework is universal across all developable capabilities including Inscription. The framework structures what reads at what level. The twelve levels carry the ten named grades as bands over them per the ratified band mapping (GRADE\_BAND\_MAPPING\_2026-07-28, Josh YES) — the grades map one-to-one onto levels 1 through 6, Adeptus Major bands levels 7 and 8, Adeptus Exemptus bands levels 9 and 10, Magister Templi is level 11, and Magus is level 12 — with the Portal Grade and the Crossing of the Abyss riding as ceremonies inside their crossings rather than holding index slots of their own. References elsewhere in this doc to Tier 7 through Tier 10 name those same rungs by their grade index — Adeptus Major at levels 7 and 8, Adeptus Exemptus at levels 9 and 10, Magister Templi at level 11, and Magus at level 12.
7.1 First Order — Outer tiers (1-99)
Tier 1 Neophyte (1-9). Quest-gate: Trade 9 introduction questline at Ch 3 Liang Bua first deliberate use. Vril-trace perception at high-intensity sites only.
Tier 2 Zelator (10-29). Earth-grade foundation. Quest-gate: foundational inscription mastery at Ch 4-7 South Asia and South India arc — Aksara Bali, Surat Batak pustaha, Pali / Sanskrit, Tamil. Direct phonetic-semantic reading of decipherable scripts.
Tier 3 Theoricus (30-49). Air-grade intellect. Quest-gate: cross-chapter knowledge integration questline. Multilingual script contexts (Arabic plus Swahili Ajami at Ch 8), pre-alphabetic sign systems, parallel-writing systems, rock-art symbolic layers. Sealed Letter reveal at Ch 8 occurs at Theoricus onset.
Tier 4 Practicus (50-69). Water-grade applied practice. Quest-gate: applied-mastery questline across multiple regions. Cuneiform full deployment at Ch 17, Phoenician transmission at Ch 18, multi-script trilingual at Ch 19 Behistun, cross-script comparative reading at Ch 25 Treaty of Kadesh.
Tier 5 Philosophus (70-99). Fire-grade aspiration; threshold. Quest-gate: trade master's wisdom-test sequence (Portal Grade ceremony) — completion required before Inner-Order initiation becomes available. The Trade 9 Philosophus Portal Grade ceremony lives at Ch 14 Nubia and Kush — the Inscription Limit Mechanic formalization at Meroitic IS the canonical wisdom-test. Humility-attribute determines productive engagement and Portal Grade completion. Completion gates the Adeptus Minor initiation at Ch 15 Egypt.
7.2 Second Order — Inner tiers (100-199)
Tier 6 Adeptus Minor (100, single-tier breakpoint). Inner-Order initiation. Substrate perception begins. Mastery earned through Adept-initiation questline — not just numerical threshold. The Trade 9 Adeptus Minor initiation occurs at Ch 15 Egypt — triple-layer hieroglyphic reading (exoteric, esoteric, vril-layer) activates here. Adeptus Minor onset is the canonical substrate-perception-begins event for Inscription per CVD §12.1.
Tier 7 Adeptus Major (101-150). Extended Inner-Order practice. Cross-chapter mastery questlines. Living Inscription Arc unlocks — vril-pattern inscription on objects per §5.1. Ch 47-48 Mesoamerica Maya glyph payoff sits in mid-Adeptus Major. Ch 66 Atlantis sits in Adeptus Major.
Tier 8 Adeptus Exemptus (151-199). Full Inner-Order mastery. Substrate perception operational at full depth. Multi-object inscription chains. Ch 70-73 fairy-realm return sits in Adeptus Exemptus. Ch 69 the Duat 42 Negative Confessions canonical recitation requires Adeptus Exemptus prerequisite for full participation.
7.3 Third Order — Prestige tiers (200+)
Tier 9 Magister Templi (200, single-tier prestige breakpoint). Quest-unlocked through prestige questline available only after Main Story Ch 77 completion. Substrate perception reaches canonical-truth-layer operational depth. Palimpsest mastery becomes available — every palimpsest in every visited location becomes readable, unlocking hidden historical layers in every site. Solo Tier A players earn Magister Templi through Tier A completion plus prestige questline.
Tier 10 Magus (200+). Tier C MMO endgame engagement only. Practitioner is functionally part of the Inscription tradition's living lineage. MMO endgame content gates here.
7.4 What never becomes fully readable
Canonical hard limits persist regardless of mastery tier.
Meroitic semantics. Adeptus Minor and above allows phonetic reading plus Contextual-Use Construction; semantic resolution remains canonically impossible per 115+ years scholarship reality.
Harappan full content. Adeptus Minor and above allows sub-linguistic vril imprint reading; phonetic plus semantic content remains canonically impossible.
Sámi joik full participation. The protagonist receives joiks and may be the subject of one, but does not compose. Per CVD §17.1 hard line.
Australian songline full sovereignty. The protagonist perceives songline geographical encoding at Adeptus Exemptus and above, but does not claim or perform. The Ch 57 scene is recognition, not mastery acquisition.
§8. HARD LINES
The hard lines below are non-negotiable per CVD §17.1 cultural depiction hard lines and §17.9 show-don't-tell hard lines.
No original joik composition. Ch 29 Sámi. Form belongs to Sámi yoikers.
No reproduction of AIATSIS-registered artwork. Ch 57 Australia. Reference only.
No Hollywood zombie tropes for Vodou. Ch 42 Haiti. Vodou is a living religion; depiction draws on Dubois, James, Desmangles, and Davis primary sources.
FUNAI respectful-distance hard line. Ch 50 Amazon. Uncontacted peoples respected as such.
No combat framed against community representatives. CVD §17.1 plus Pillar 3\.
No invented Meroitic semantics. The limit is canonical academic-reality.
No skill-failure-framing for Inscription Limit encounters. The limit is the knowledge's, not the protagonist's.
No fairy-realm-script identification before the Ch 8 in-chapter reveal. Scholar-Outsider Amara's revelation is the Ch 8 narrative pivot.
No pre-Ch 76 Grand Sage identity hints. CVD §17.9 hard line.
No Ch 70-77 fairy-realm-script content elaboration beyond what is canonically locked in T2 Chapter Design briefs. Spoiler protection.
The House of Velheim's ancient document assembles from the 77 hidden inscriptions, not from single-location mass recovery. Spine structure is canonical.
The Velheim assembled document is fully readable by Ch 76 at the latest, not earlier at full content.
